FINANCIAL SUPPORT

The Astronomy and Astrophysics Department supports graduate students with Graduate Student Researcher (GSR) and Teaching Assistant (TA) positions. Students are strongly encouraged to secure independent support during their entire academic career.

TA & GSR Quarterly Salaries at 50% Time.

Students who have been Advanced to Candidacy (ATC) automatically qualify for the In-Candidacy Offset Fee Grant (ICFOG) which the students will receive for six consecutive quarters thereafter. The ICFOG grant is a small reduction off the students registration fee and changes on an annual basis (~estimated reduction $300 per quarter). ATC students funding through a GSR will move from Level IV funding to Level V-VI.

In addition to TA and GSR positions, the department and Graduate Division offer additional fellowship opportunities for continuing and first-year students.

Beginning Fall 2006, new doctoral student who receive a national fellowship will automatically receive a Regents' Fellowship in the same amount as the national fellowship to be used after the student has advanced to candidacy. The Regents' fellowship is for only one year and to qualify students must receive the national fellowship before they begin their graduate course work at UCSC. This program applies only to new doctoral students who receive one of the following national fellowships: EPA Star Fellowship, Ford Fellowship, Hertz Fellowship, Hughes Fellowship, Javits Fellowship, Mellon Fellowship, or NSF Fellowship.

First Year Graduate Student Fellowships

Regents Fellowships

A limited number of these fellowships are awarded to first-year graduate students. These nine-month awards provide an estimated stipend of $15,000 plus payment of all university fees except nonresident tuition.

Chancellor's Fellowships

A limited number of these fellowships are awarded to first-year graduate students in doctoral programs. These nine-month awards provide an estimated stipend of $24,000 plus payment of all university fees and nonresident tuition.

Eugene Cota-Robles Fellowships

These state-funded, merit-based fellowships are awarded on a competitive basis to first-year graduate students who have overcome significant social or educational obstacles to achieve a college education and whose backgrounds equip them to contribute to intellectual diversity among the graduate student population. These awards provide an estimated stipend of $21,000 plus payment of all university fees except nonresident tuition. The award may be renewed for your second year of graduate study contingent on your satisfactory academic progress.

Continuing Student Fellowships

Dissertation-Year Fellowships

These state-funded, merit-based fellowships are awarded on a competitive basis to doctoral graduate students who have overcome significant social or educational obstacles to achieve a college education, and whose backgrounds equip them to contribute to intellectual diversity among the graduate student population. Fellows receive a $21,000 stipend plus payment of fees.

President's Dissertation Fellowship

The Graduate Council awards these fellowships to students who have Advanced to Candidacy based on the academic achievement of the nominees, their potential for success in academia, and the extent that the recipients contribute to the diversity of the pool of doctoral degree recipients. The fellowship provides a stipend of $18,000 plus payment of all registration fees for the academic year.

Research and Travel Awards

All graduate students are eligible for these awards. When selected to give a presentation at a conference or obtain an opportunity to do research, students may apply for a Research and Travel Award through the Graduate Student Association. These awards are generally under $300.

Doctoral Student Sabbatical Fellowship

Any student in good academic standing, having served as a Teaching Assistant or Associate-In for at least six of the previous nine quarters may apply for this fellowship. The fellowship provides the equivalent of a TAship(currently $5,204per quarter) and pays all fees for that quarter.

Achievement Rewards for College Scientists Fellowship

A national organization, the ARCS Foundation (Achievement Rewards for College Scientists) provides funds for scholarships to deserving graduate and undergraduate students in the fields of natural science, mathematics, medicine and engineering. These awards provide an estimated stipend of $11,000.

Fellowship Databases

The following is a link to a fellowship database maintained by Cornell University Graduate School http://www.gradschool.cornell.edu/?p=132. This site lists many available fellowships and is searchable by keyword as well as field.

The following webpage was developed by one of our current graduate students while she was an undergraduate student at MIT http://web.mit.edu/uwip/fellowships.htm. This webpage lists fellowships available to graduate students.
