Jason Kalirai of the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore, Md., has been awarded the 2013 Newton Lacy Pierce Prize. This annual prize from the American Astronomical Society is for outstanding achievement in observational astronomy by an astronomer under the age of 36.

Astronomy Professor Ramirez-Ruiz delivered a keynote presentation about Turning Stars into Gold at the 2012 SACNAS Meeting in front of more than 3000 attendees. SACNAS is a national nonprofit organization dedicated to fostering the success of Hispanic/Chicano and Native American scientists. Its annual meeting is the largest meeting of minority scientists in the nation.

Astronomy visiting student Sarah Pearson wins the Nordic Women in Physics prize
University of Copenhagen summer student Sarah Pearson, mentor by UCSC astronomers Laura Lopez and Enrico Ramirez-Ruiz, has been awarded the Nordic Women in Physics prize for her research entitled "Retracing the past: Explosion properties Uncovered by Supernova Remnant Asymmetries". Sarah is the 2011 Sophia and Tycho Brahe undergraduate fellow, named after the most eminent cosmologists Denmark has ever produced. Its purpose is to promote collaborations between the Dark Cosmology Centre at the Niels Bohr Institute and UCSC.

The American Astronomical Society (AAS) has awarded the 2011 Henry Norris Russell Lectureship to Sandra Faber, University Professor and chair of astronomy and astrophysics at the University of California, Santa Cruz. The Russell Lectureship, awarded annually on the basis of a lifetime of eminence in astronomical research, is one of the most prestigious awards given by the AAS.

Stan Woosley, UCSC Astronomy Professor, awarded coveted supercomputing time
U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu announced on December 2, 2010 the largest ever awards of the Department's supercomputing time. "Petascale Simulations of Type la Supernovae from Ignition to Observables", with PI Stan Woosley and CO-I's John Bell and Mike Zingale of Stony Brook University, was awarded 50 million hours. The average allocation awarded was 27 million hours.

Three UCSC Astronomy Graduate students have been selected to receive Hubble Fellowships
Mark Ammons, Genevieve Graves and Evan Kirby, have all been selected to receive the 2009 Hubble Fellowship. The Hubble PostDoctoral Fellowship Program is an amalgamation of the pre-existing Hubble and Spitzer Fellowship programs. "The new fellows are among the best and brightest young astronomers in the world," said Jon Morse, director of the Astrophysics Division in NASA's Science Mission Directorate in Washington. "They already have contributed significantly to studies of how the universe works, the origin of our cosmos and whether we are alone in the cosmos. The fellowships will serve as a springboard for scientific leadership in the years to come, and as an inspiration for the next generation of students and early career researchers."

Assistant Professor Jonathan Fortney was an invited speaker at the 20th annual National Academy of Sciences "Kavli Frontiers of Science Symposium" in Irvine, CA from Nov. 6-8. The meeting brings together an elite group of 70 young scientists in diverse disciplines to discuss research at the forefront of scientific knowledge. Fortney was one of two invited speakers on the topic of extrasolar planets, one of eight highlighted research areas that ranged across all of the natural sciences.
