Photon Horizon Institute

Having formed as a Themed Academic Working Group in 2018, the Photon Horizon Institute (PHI) continues to serve as a broad collaborative framework for cross-departmental interests in the technology of light, optics, imaging, and vision, and the visual arts. 

We have identified three core missions that will make PHI truly unique, world-class, and competitive for the next call for NSF Science and Technology or Engineering Research Center, expected 2-3 years from now. The first of these missions is the Astrophotonics Initiative, which we describe here. Initiatives in Biophotonics and Quantum Photonics will be pursued in subsequent years. Each mission is suited to a variety of funding opportunities that would allow us to demonstrate progress towards a multi-million dollar center-scale proposal.
